The Museo Franciscano, inside the magnificent Monastery of San Francisco, might only be of interest to those with a penchant for religious art, but the admission fee is worth paying just to see the old courtyard through the windows. Included in the ticket price is a guide; English-speaking guides are often also available if you get there earlier in the day. Amid the numerous paintings from the 16th-18th centuries and fully clothed statues of Jesus' disciples is a more powerful collection of works depicting the Passion of Christ by 17th-century Quiteño school artist Miguel de Santiago. Discounts are available for students who show their ISIC (or alternative) cards and the museum is perfectly placed for a post-visit coffee on the formidable Plaza San Francisco or a wander in the interesting fair-trade shop beside the monastery.
