Visited this restaurant as part of a group (arranged via our tour operator). We had to choose a specific menu from three options (thus no mixing & matching of courses) which was somewhat disappointing. Initial expectations of an opulent, historical theatre/opera house were soon dispelled upon entering the restaurant - located in a long and very high-ceilinged room, the decor was black and crimson 'padded' walls. The place has no atmosphere. The food ... my starter was cauliflower cheese soup - and that's what it tasted like ... pureed cauliflower cheese. Tasty, but way too thick and rich. Main course was tournedos of beef - the waiters didn't bother asking any guests how they wished the steak to be cooked, and the unitiated amongst us didn't think to make a specific request. The result of this was that the tournedos arrived on the table either oozing blood or medium rare. Two people asked for theirs to be cooked more, and when they came back just a couple of minutes later it seemed obvious they'd been nuked in a microwave. Dessert was poached mango with a red fruit sorbet set on top ... the trouble is that Mango tends to go quite stringy and 'gooey' when poached making it difficult to chew and swallow. Service was adequate, although somewhat staggered as they seemed to serve all tables with the grilled chicken option, and then serve all tables with the beef option and then all tables with the vegetarian option. Basically, if good manners were to be observed those that received the chicken would have had to wait around five minutes before they could start eating whilst waiting for the final 'option' to arrive. We advised other diners to get dug in rather than waiting for our beef to arrive! All in all I was not impressed - even if the meal we had was as part of a group it should not affect the quality of the food nor the service.
Restrained but not oppressive atmosphere; outstanding food from an extensive menu; the meal we had here was possibly one of the best ever, but be prepared for the prices which are high for Quito.
