While Guápulo is small and somewhat hidden beneath the posh Av. de Gonzalez Suarez, the bohemian neighborhood is worth the trip or, in local parlance, vale la pena. You can begin walking from the Mirador de Guápulo, a restaurant and lookout which, by day, offers local artisanía to tour buses that stop see sprawling green valley below, and, by night, pumps out live music and a full menu of Ecuadorian fare. Take the stairs (as long as there's still daylight), as the view is unbeatable. At the bottom of the stairs you’ll hit a small tienda, which is a perfect place to grab water or a snack for the rest of your walk. As you head down the winding Camino de Orellana you’ll pass five or so small cafés, most open for dinner; only Café Chiquito is open on Sundays. There are a couple more tiendas along the way, one has internet and a phone booth for national or international calls. At the bottom of the great hill is the Iglesia de Guápulo, a gorgeous sanctuary with a museum and monastery inside. There are also park benches for relaxing in this church square below, which you will want to take advantage of before making the long hike back up.
