Traveler Reviews of Hostal Sur

Like a Family Stay...

After a miserable start (at a hostal that shall remain nameless!) to what is an indefinite stay  in Quito, I arrived at Hostal Sur... It was so nice to come to a clean, safe, family-run, friendly, professional hostal that comes fully equipped with wifi, tv, a private bathroom with HOT water, laundry, kitchen access... among other amenities.  I am here studying Spanish in Quito for about a year, and plan on being here at Hostal Sur for another month or so while I figure out where I'm going to be more permanently.  Although many Spanish students choose to live with local families, I really wanted something more private.  I have gotten the perfect mix here at Hostal Sur... it is family-owned, and all family members are here working throughout the week.  Many speak English, but they all also speak Spanish if you are seeking opportunities to practice!  I've now been here for about 6 weeks, and feel somewhat like I have been temporarily adopted by the family. :)  Which is great when you are in a country where you know no one!   I've even started receiving cooking lessons in the kitchen.More generally... I chose this hostal mainly because of the reviews of La Floresta.  It is one of Quito's safer areas, and the hostal is on a somewhat quiet residential street near local businesses and restaurants.  I did not want to be in the center of the Mariscal...I prefer La Floresta and nearby Guapulo for nights out.  Also, I am a gym addict and have been going to the nearby Swissotel gym (and pool!).... which is less than a 1 minute run from the hostal.  The guests I have seen come and go are all over the board- some businesspeople here for conferences and meetings, some wandering travelers, some fellow Spanish students, some large groups of families here in Quito for parties....prices here are more than reasonable, and if you are staying here for a month or longer and are willing to pay up front, you are likely to get a good deal.  Though I personally haven't needed it, the hostal will take you around Quito and nearby attractions for reasonable prices as well...  All in all, this hostal is a fantastic choice if you are looking for something clean, safe, quiet, friendly and full of amenities.... believe me, I looked around online before arriving and also once I arrived....!

Great Family Run Hotel

I loved this family hotel with a great atmosphere! Stayed here with a friend for three nights and we were expecting a hostel, but actually it is much better, like a small family run hotel. They just don't have enough rooms to call themselves a "hotel". Don't expect hip backpackers hanging around though, but rather young and old, quiet couples. The family who runs the hotel is very helpful and nice, they gave us great advice about restaurants, travel etc. and were very helpful when I got my passport stolen. They are very welcoming and open minded and will also pick you up at the airport for free if you tell them. They speak English perfectly well. Rooms are big and very clean, nice small breakfast with fresh pressed juice and eggs.  The area feels quite safe, like a mix of business and residential. You can take a 10 minute walk to the busy restaurant/club area in the new town. It's only 15 minutes to the Esmeralda bus service, the best overland bus service to several towns around Ecuador. I especially appreciated the good atmosphere of this hotel, and the nice family who just opened that hotel some months ago.

This place was great!

This hotel was a great bargain. Clean, well-kept, and recently remodeled. Much nicer than the other places I looked at in the same price range. It is a family-run place, with friendly and helpful staff. It is just outside the Mariscal, so it was a bit quieter, but still convenient to transportation and everything else. They have discounts for students, long stays, etc. They speak English, but spoke Spanish with me because they new I wanted to practice.
