Backpacker’s take note: La Mariscal is the place to stay. The so-called Gringolandia of Quito is loud and energized; there is fast food and local fare. You will find clubs, bars and cafés, internet hot spots and plenty of laundry service. This is undoubtedly the hub for most gringos, as anything you may need can be found within a one block radius. Mariscal hostels are some of the cheapest in the city, but the area is worth checking out for upscale spots as well. Try the posh Nü House or the impressive JW Marriott Hotel Quito, both within walking distance from the neighborhood’s center point, Plaza Foch. Mariscal hostels, mid-range hotels, and fancier digs are all waiting. Remember, however, to stay smart and safe, keeping note of all your belongings and try not to carry a lot of cash or valuables, especially late at night. La Mariscal has a lot to offer, but the benefits come with some shady characters.
