Backpacker’s take note: La Mariscal is the place to stay. The so-called Gringolandia of Quito is loud and energized, chock-full of bars and clubs, international restaurants and cafés, Internet hot spots, and plenty of laundry service options. This is undoubtedly the hub for most gringos, as anything you may need can be found within a few-block radius. Mariscal hostels are some of the cheapest in the city, but the area is worth checking out for its mid-range hotels and upscale spots as well. One of the setbacks of staying in this neighborhood is its questionable safety, but if you are smart and aware of your surroundings and belongings, especially at night, you should be fine. La Mariscal has a lot to offer, but the benefits come with some shady characters.
