Hip and modern, for a unique take on Italian cuisine, head to Carmine in the northern sector of the Mariscal.
Dishes here include a variety of tasty pastas, seafood and meat mains cooked in a Mediterranean style.
Owner and chef, Bill Carmine translates the menu board and describes dishes in English for those with only a smattering of Spanish.
At $9 a dish, the restaurant is a little more expensive than most Mariscal restaurants, however, it is well worth the splurge. The servings are generous and with the trendy décor and ambient vibes, you could be forgiven for believing yourself in New York City.
Last entry, 23:00 Monday to Saturday, however good service continues until you have finished supping your last dregs and are ready to stumble back to your hotel.

Food is great but I got mugged while going back to the hotel!
This place is pricier than other Quito restaurants but wonderful for that special occasion.
a bit pricier, but you pay for what you get.fantastic Italian cuisine and an exquisite wine list in an atmosphere that made me reminess of Rome, or at least New York...warm friendly Brooklyn/Italian owner and excellent service.
The food and the service
The owner's name is Bill? That's odd - he's from Italy, so seems unlikely. Anyway, my Italian husband and I went and had great food. The preparation of my tagliata (beef) was a tad heavier than normal, but the meat was excellent. My husband had great fish. Excellent appetizers, and the chef is fun, coming around to every table. For New Yorkers - it's a very funny coincidence that it's called Carmine's like the NY restaurant. He and that Carmine worked together for a long time in NY! Then that guy opened that restaurant, and this Carmine eventually ended up in Quito, where until 3 years ago he was the chef at the well-known and highly regarded Pavarotti.
Carmine is a lovely place to eat. The food is delicious and presented in an attractive manner. And the chef really does go through the menu board answering questions about each dish. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who wanted a mini-splurge by Ecuadorian standards (it´s really not expensive compared to home).
