Cirque du Soleil came to La Mariscal in the form of Tarot Café-Restaurant. This bizarre establishment contains some crazy artwork and designs, ranging from blown-up tarot card paintings and a mural of Venus on one wall to scary Asian masks on the next. Most of the artwork, including the risqué, Calvin Klein-esque paintings outside the bathrooms, is available for sale. The restaurant owner, in addition to being a contemporary artist himself, reads fortunes for $15 a prophecy, divined through tarot cards, coffee dregs, or runes. If that doesn't suit you, you could order one of the signature cocktails named after tarot cards, smoke one of the hookahs for $5, and chill out in one of the two cozy lounge areas. Circus performances play on the café television, and if you come on a Friday night, you would even be treated to the real deal, with live performances of theater, clowns, or pantomimes. The only thing that won't blow your mind is the menu, which offers pedestrian, blasé pub fare like nachos, burritos and salads.
