Just south of Quito in the quiet town of Tambillo lies Santa Martha, a sanctuary for animals that have been victims of trafficking and abuse. Founded in 2001 by dairy farm owners Johnny Córdova and Brenda Castillo, the reserve believes in respect for all forms of life, both great and small. Working with the local police and the Environmental Ministry of Ecuador, Santa Martha rescues animals from houses, hostels, animal markets and even the circus. Primates, birds and reptiles are common critters that are rescued, but the reserve extends its care to all kinds of animals, including wild cats and bears.
As an NGO, Santa Martha depends on volunteers and donations. For a minimum commitment of two weeks, volunteers can live and work on the reserve, feeding and cleaning the animals as well as building and maintaining constructions to help improve the animals’ quality of life on the reserve. Cost is $120 per week, all of which goes toward feeding and protecting the animals. The price includes accommodation in a volunteer house with cable TV, hot water and a fully equipped kitchen.
To promote sustainable tourism, volunteers are asked to contribute $20 a week to buy and cook food from local markets. To get here, take a bus from Terminal Terrestre headed south toward Latacunga or Ambato and ask to be dropped off at Tambillo. From here you can take a $3-6 taxi (depending on group size) to the reserve.
