Situated an hour south of Quito on the slopes of Corazón (“heart”) volcano, Hacienda La Alegría is in the heart of the “avenue of the volcanoes.” On a clear day, you can see not only Corazón but also four other volcanoes from the courtyard. Still a working organic farm (guests can participate in farm-related activities such as cow milking, etc. if they wish), La Alegría specializes in horses.

They offer a variety of tours, including a one-day trip (without lodging) for $75, a two-day overnight for $320, and longer multi-day trips for a variety of prices. All meals are included. Although La Alegría’s horseback excursions are more expensive than those you can find in a town like Baños, they take excellent care of their horses. Some of the less reputable outfitters do not, a fact which often turns off, offends or depresses tourists.

La Alegría also offers hiking, mountain biking and excursions to the nearby cloud forest. In addition, La Alegría hosts an annual summer camp for Ecuadorian children.

Simple bed and breakfast costs $55 per person, and full room and board is $180/person, with a horseback ride included. La Alegría only has space for 18 guests, so if you wish to visit, you may want to make reservations ahead of time.
