San Jorge is a very historic hacienda – it was once owned by Ecuadorian president Eloy Alfaro – on the outskirts of Quito. It gets its name from the 375 acre San Jorge botanical reserve where it is located.
There are a variety of rooms available, from singles to suites. It is a typical converted hacienda, with the wide hallways, elegant rooms, beautiful gardens, and fine dining that the hacienda visitor has come to expect. It also has all the modern luxuries: game rooms, sauna, pool, steam room and hot tub are available in addition to conference facilities. San Jorge does special events: the dining room can seat 250 guests.
San Jorge provides more activities than most converted haciendas do. There are the usual horseback rides and bike trips, but San Jorge also offers bird watching, a trip/class about shamanism in Ecuador, tours of the botanical reserve and more. They offer trips and tours of Quito and nearby attractions such as Otavalo. There is also an acclimatization center for those who wish to do high-altitude hiking or mountain climbing.

We loved San Jorge; from the moment we were collected from Quito in the evening, it was a wonderful experience! Cheryl was a super resource prior to our arrival. Having never travelled in Ecuador, we had plenty of pre-arrival questions and she patiently answered them all. She also arranged for a driver for us from the Quito airport to the lodge. That got us off to a great start. When we arrived and were shown our room we just felt like we had gone to the best home in the world. The rooms are lovely, they have a nice feel about them. The rooms at all 3 lodges were all so comfortable and spacious but considering you get transportation to and from Quito, 3 big meals each day, expert guides and a nice room, it is good deal. Great little place - very clean and nicely decorated, with en suite bathrooms. Everything is spotless, the resort is nestled up in the hills just outside the city so all you hear at day or night are the soothing sounds of the jungle.
We were very disappointed in the dismal atmosphere (kind of creepy, actually), the lonliness (we were the only ones there), the very average food (definitely not gourmet!) and the cold room and dining room (we wore 2 jackets, hat and scarf). The horseback riding trip was a joke! The horses have archaic equipment, which appeared to be cruel and abusive. One of us was even injured due to a horse getting spooked by a pack of dogs (we were led by guide into ranch land with dogs on premises).
Wonderful atmosphere, staff, surroundings, and vibe - San Jorge is a must-see for outside Quito. Whether you have a few extra days on your way to something else or you're looking for a fabulous 10 day birding experience with knowledgable guides and authenticity throughout everything you do, San Jorge should be on all South Americna explorers' itineraries. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!!
Gorgeous gardens, 18th Century Buildings, great food, helpful staff, organized tours and close to the airport
It mis-represented itself on it´s website. The pool is not clean the sauna, spa turkish bath is not in working order. It is very cold at night and there is no heat. some rooms had no hot water. We paid for excursions and we did not recieve them.
