V!VA User‘s Description

Papallacta is dusty little town known for its great hot springs and fresh trout. It is located about three kilometers off the main road, an hour and a half east of Quito on the road to Tena. There is a luxury hotel and spa on the road just before the main entrance to the pools, and a handful or restaurants (try the trout!) and a couple of cheap hostels as well.

Traveler Reviews of Papallacta

Road to Papallacta

Rating: 100%

The road to Papallacta is horrible! Positively the worst road I've even driven in my life. However, the good news is, the bad part of the road is only the last few miles, and hey, it makes a soak in the hotsprings even that more enjoyable. It's all part of the experience.

Palallacta thermal baths

Rating: 100%

The drive from Quito is lovely and the scenery around the baths is gorgeous! The area is well maintained, and the baths are the cleanest and prettiest in Ecuador.

Rainy but good

Rating: 75%

It was rainy when we went also. Please be advised that it is in the mountains. Coming from Quito I was basically wearing my bathing suit and flip flops with a throw over and we were unpleasantly surprised by the ever-so-cold weather. Don't worry, you heat up nicely in the springs, but the to and from was very cold. It's true that you can take a bus from Terminal Terrestre, but it leaves you at the bottom of the hill and you have to find transport to get to the top. Be aware of this; luckily we found a nice couple that drove us to the top but we would have been otherwise majorly screwed. Also, it is not 5 dollars for the pools but around 15 dollars. Still worth the money. The massage package including the pools for two people was 94 dollars. Paying $47 each for springs, a massage and a steam shower is a really good deal. I was pleased and would go again for a day! Food at the restaurant was also excellent!
