Pululahua Volcanic Crater Overview

Pululahua is a volcanic crater just north of the equator. Set at an elevation of 3,356 m (11,010 ft) it offers spectacular views of a patchwork golden and green farms and forests. Hikes, horseback riding and relaxing are the main activities at this now dormant 3 km-wide crater. The last eruption was about 2,400 years ago.
You need a private vehicle to reach the crater, which is about 15 minutes up from the main highway just north of Mitad del Mundo, the equator, and about 25 km (15 miles) north of Quito. The road is mostly unpaved, so a 4-wheel drive is recommended.
The weather is sunny and warm most of the year, but clouds can move in quickly, so come with layers.
The only food and lodging on Pulalagua is the luxurious and relaxing The Crater Restaurant and Hotel. However, many tour operators based out of Quito offer daytrips and activities in the area.
