Ilaló is a long-extinct and deeply eroded volcano located next to the Quito suburb of Tumbaco. Ilaló splits this valley in two: Valle de Los Chillos to the south and Valle de Tumbaco to the north. Climbing Ilaló makes a good half-day escape from the city and suburbs. Some choose to bike it, but it's best reached by taxi once you get into Tumbaco and involves a drive up the hill followed by a 3-5 hour hike depending on your speed.
Once option is to have the climb start off as soon as you get off of the bus (ask the bus driver or locals if you're unsure) and just follow the only road up to the church visible on the foothills of Ilaló.
From here, the road turns into a narrow trail of sorts - stay true to this path until you reach the Cross at the top. The actual summit of Ilalo is visible to the north and can be reached by hiking down to the saddle of both summits and then going up through the thick forest.
