Almost 2 km (1.2 miles) in length, Parque Carolina is situated between residential and commercial districts toward the north of the New Town. It is the number one choice for sports enthusiasts, housing several athletic facilities, including: a football field, basketball and tennis courts, volleyball nets, a skating area, and some of the only bicycle lanes in the city. A boating lake and children’s playground make this park popular with families, too. Unsurprisingly, it’s busiest during weekends, but despite its weekend popularity, Carolina is still probably your best bet for finding your own private patch of grass amid the city. Parque Carolina is great during the day, but after dark it’s best to not pass through. The park can be reached by any of its four bordering streets: Av. Shyris, Eloy Alfaro, Amazonas or Naciones Unidas.
