Almost two kilometers (1.2 miles) in length, Parque Carolina is situated between residential and commercial districts in the northern part of Quito. It is the number one choice for sports enthusiasts, housing several athletic facilities, including a football field, basketball and tennis courts, volleyball nets, a skating area, and some of the only bicycle lanes in the city. A boating lake and children’s playground make this park popular with families, too. Unsurprisingly, it’s busiest during weekends, but despite its weekend popularity, Carolina is still probably your best bet for finding your own private patch of grass amid the city. Something that you shouldn't pass up on if you plan on visiting the park is the Jardin Botanico (Botanical Garden) that's filled with all kinds of orchids and flowers, located on the Southeastern end of the park itself. Parque Carolina is great during the day, but after dark it’s best to not pass through. The park can be reached by any of its four bordering streets: Avenida Shyris, Avenida Eloy Alfaro, Avenida Amazonas or Avenida Naciones Unidas.
