Climbing Rucu Pichincha - Climbing Quito - Ecuador

Rucu Pichincha is a volcano located just east of Quito. It is one of the most popular day hikes near the city. Access is via the TelefériQo ($8). It is important to spend a few days in Quito before attempting this peak due to the risk of altitude sickness. From the top of the Teleferico, walk along the beaten path along the grassy ridge for approximately 1.5 hours. At the base of the rock, you can continue for another 1.5 hours to the top, although you need to be prepared for some scrambling. From the top, on a clear day, you will see breathtaking views of many volcanoes like Cayambe, Antisana, Cotopaxi, the llinizas and Chimborazo. You can also rent horses at the top if you want to take it easy as you explore the surrounding area. In recent years, there have been muggings near the hiking trail of Rucu Pichincha so it would be best to check with the TelefériQo staff to advise you of the latest news regarding security on the mountain.
