Quito has accommodation options for travelers of any economic stature and for travelers with specific interests, whether it's history, art, trekking or partying. Quito hostels are abundant and range in price, depending on whether you want a dorm bed or a spacious room with a private bathroom. Hostels are the best places to meet fellow travelers, so stay in one if you're looking for a traveling companion or a social atmosphere.
Keep an eye out for some basic amenities when looking for accommodations, especially when deciding on cheaper places to stay. Evenings are cool throughout the year and heat in hotels is pretty rare, so hot water and thick blankets are a necessity. Many hotels have rooms with beautiful views of the Pichincha volcanoes or city skylines at no extra charge, so it never hurts to ask.
There are also large, more luxurious hotels with solid reputations, great restaurants and safe locations, many of which are located outside the Mariscal neighborhood. If you want to avoid the impersonality of large hotels, another luxury option is the bed and breakfast. Quito boasts some very nice B&Bs, many of which are housed in renovated colonial buildings in or near the Old Town.
Anyone who wants to be in a central location, with easy access to the restaurants and bars of the New Town as well as the sights and charm of the Old Town, the Mariscal is a good place to stay. However, since this is where much of the city action is, you may find many places to be a bit noisy. Those who want to be in the heart of cultural Quito, surrounded by museums, cobble-stoned streets, and expansive plazas with impressive colonial buildings will want to stay in the Old Town. Business travelers often prefer to stay in the northern sector of the city, which is more modern and well-connected by transport, or in La Floresta.
Quito is a large city with much to see and do. Don't be surprised if you find yourself staying longer than anticipated. If you stay for more than a couple of days, ask for a discount on your room. Bargaining is always appropriate.
