Best Places In Quito To Buy Souvenirs

You know the holiday gift-giving season is approaching when VIVA's staff decamps to the Mercado Artesenal in Quito. The artisan market is the best place in the city to pick up gifts and souvenirs. The offerings range from the super-traditional wool blankets and ponchos to modern gifts like t-shirts and sneakers. The market is also a good place to pick up ceramics, jewelry, incense and pretty much anything else you would want as a foreign/exotic gift to your loved ones. Come prepared to bargain hard, but if you're not up for the challenge, two nearby streets - Juan Leon Mera and Avenida Amazonas - are lined with craft and antique shops that have fixed prices. Also, on the weekends, Parque El Ejido hosts a weekend arts and crafts market, with some spectacular paintings on display (if you can negotiate with the artists themselves, they can be quite cheap too!) along Avenida 6 de Diciembre and Patria.
