Blue Hearts

Ecuador, Quito

highway memorials Quito

While traveling around Quito and outside on the major highways, you may come across blue hearts painted in the road. In Spanish, these are known as Corazones Azules (blue hearts) and they have been painted for a reason—to indicate that someone or some people have died due to road accidents at these locations.

Launched relatively recently, in the last few years or so, the Blue Heart campaign is one that is designed to remind drivers of the consequences of driving dangerously on Ecuador’s road network. The campaign also exists in other countries, such as Panama.

On the road out to Papallacta, you will observe one spot not too far from the town of Pifo, where there are more than 40 hearts painted together on the road. This is here due to a tragic accident that occurred in 2007, when a large family group traveling on an old school bus, fatally crashed with very few survivors, only a couple of children. Small hearts indicate a child’s death, and the larger hearts represent each adult that died.
