Quito’s International Airport (Code: UIO) is conveniently located in the north of the city (Av. Amazonas and Av. De la Prensa ), only five miles from the city center. The airport is easily located by following the trajectory of the planes that continually fly extremely low over the city on their landing routes.
You can get to the airport by using public transport, and riding the bus or Trole undoubtedly will save you some money. However, due to its proximity to central Quito, taxis are safe and relatively cheap option, with rides out to the airport costing $5; taxi rides cost a little more heading into Quito and you should expect to pay between $7 and $8. These prices increase late at night and early in the morning.
As the airport is incredibly small, it is very easy to navigate. The international and domestic terminals are side by side, and both contain a couple of small cafés and shops. There are also several ATMs, a currency exchange, rental car offices for Avis, Budget, Hertz, Team and Localiza and a car park. If you are stuck at the airport for any length of time, there is a mini mall opposite and a branch of Pizza el Hornero next door.
Quito’s long-awaited brand new airport is currently being constructed to the east of the city and is scheduled to be completed in 2010. You can check arrival and departure times on the official website: www.quiport.com. For more information on booking a trip to Quito see Quito Flights.
