Quito's Street Food

Not all of Quito's best food is sold in restaurants; some of the tastiest treats are dished out from the humblest carts and stands. Quito's street food is as diverse as it is delicious, with street carts serving everything from ice-cream to Middle Eastern food. Furthermore, while street food has a somewhat less-than-sanitary reputation, many quite├▒os eat it quite frequently. Just follow the crowds and you will probably end up at a safe vendor.

The type of street food available varies from neighborhood-to-neighborhood. In the Centro Historico, mobile carts sell traditional highland food. Common dishes include fritada con mote (fried pork chunks with hominy), cuero (fried pork rinds) and cevichocho (ceviche made with beans rather than seafood). In the Mariscal, there are several places to grab a slice of pizza or a burrito at take-out joints along the sidewalk, so you can line your stomach a bit between bars. Throughout the north, you will find hot dog and shawarma stands: Av. Shyris near Parque Carolina has a particularly high concentration of shawarma places.
