Off the northern coast of Floreana Island is a jagged set of rocks that just out of the sea. The rocks are in a rough circle: hence the name, the Devil’s Crown. One of the best snorkeling spots in the islands, visitors may see sharks, rays, many fish, turtles and more. Pangas typically drop passengers off on the windy, deep side, and then you can swim around counter-clockwise to the shallower, calmer leeward side.

There can be rough seas and strong currents at the Devil’s Crown, and you should not attempt it unless you are a strong swimmer and in good shape. Be sure to check your gear beforehand: the Devil’s Crown is a lousy place to try to fix a leaky mask, because there is nowhere to stand and little to grab onto.

For those who brave the waters, however, there are many rewards. Keep your eyes open for the yellow-and-black Moorish idols: you’ll see them about ten feet down or more, and they’re shy. As you come around Devil’s Crown to the side facing Floreana, you’ll find yourself in a calm, sandy area with large rocks on either side. This sandy bottom is a good place to look for the elusive scorpionfish. They rarely move, using their natural camouflage to hide from their prey. On the deep side of the Devil’s Crown, look for larger marine animals such as rays and turtles: the occasional shark is also spotted there. Sometimes sea lions like to swim around the sandy areas inside the crown.
