Common Moorhen in Galapagos - Birdwatching - Ecuador
Gallinula chloropus
Also called the Common Waterhen and Common Gallinule, the Common Moorhen is a familiar sight in many areas of the world. A member of the Rail family, it is a medium-sized bird, somewhere between a pigeon and a chicken in size. It has black feathers with a few white ones in the tail and wings. It is most easily distinguished by its bright red “face” around the eyes and over the bill. It also has skinny, bright yellow legs.
The Common Moorhen eats small insects and plants, and can often be seen puttering around ponds and lagoons. El Junco Lake on San Cristobal Island is a good place to spot one.
