The white-tail damselfish (stegastes leucorus beebei) is a familiar sight to many Galápagos snorkelers and divers. This fish, much more spectacular when it is a juvenile, is found in most dive and snorkel spots in the islands, where they favor rocky formations in relatively shallow water. They are brownish gray to black. Adults and juveniles are identified by a white stripe at the base of their tail - in some adults, the stripe may disappear. They generally have a bright orange "eyebrow" that makes identifying them easy, and there is often a bright yellow stripe on their pectoral fins. They ignore divers, only retreating into holes and shelter if too closely approached.
