Sally Lightfoot Crabs (Graspus graspus, cangrejos) are named for their ability to flitter across rock faces like the famous dancer. Adults have a dramatic red-orange color, with a blue underside. Since red is the first color to disappear underwater, this coloration serves to camouflage the crabs. Juveniles, which are heavily predated, also rely on camouflage: they are black so that they can disappear against the lava background that serves as their habitat.
They are found on lava shores throughout the islands, but common sightings are in Las Bachas (Santa Cruz), Puerto Egas (Santiago), and Sombrero Chino.
