The Humedales, or “wetlands,” are a can’t-miss for those staying a couple days in Puerto Villamil. The humedales consist of a good trail through mangroves, pools, beaches and rocky shores. It’s well worth a visit, as many different types of birds nest there. The trail also ends up at Isabela’s old cementery, which is interesting because some of the earliest colonists are buried there. You’ll also find the Wall of Tears there.
Along the trail you’ll find Orchilla Hill, which is an easy climb. From the top there is a nice view of town and Isabela’s volcanoes. Also look for “La Playita,” a small, secluded beach. The park has released some giant tortoises into the wild near here, so keep an eye open for them, too!
There is a picnic area popular with locals, but don’t plop down just anywhere in respect for the nesting birds.
