Beto’s beach bar is a far cry from the overly commercial Puerto Ayora. According to a Santa Cruz fisherman, Isla Isabela is today what Santa Cruz was before the tourist explosion of the 1980s changed the island to the point of no return. Here, the beach is the bar. Wooden tables set in the sand are warmed nightly by a log-fed bonfire. The bar itself is sheltered, but only moderately so, as two of its walls are still open to the elements. Beto can’t seem to decide whether it’s an indoor or outdoor bar:  exterior tables are lit by a string of red-light lanterns. Liquor grows on trees at Beto’s: A lone tree, strewn with empty bottles of Jack Daniels and Captain Morgan’s Rum, forms a natural barrier between the bar and the great, white-sand beach beyond. Cocktails are pricey, but no more so than in any other part of the Galápagos. Four dollars will buy you a caipirinha, cuba libre, or gin and tonic. The décor and ambience is great, but with one caveat: the music is similar to a Starbucks’ playlist. Norah Jones, Jack Johnson and Joan Osbourne played back to back during a night spent at Beto’s.
