If you’re approaching the Hotel Castro from the outside, veteran travelers in Latin America will see something to set off all of their cheesy dive hotel sensors: three foot high stenciled red letters on a bare concrete wall, high in the air, advertising “HOTEL CASTRO.” As any savvy traveler knows, if you advertise your hotel with three-foot high red letters on a bare concrete wall, you might as well have it say “DON’T STAY HERE.”

Fortunately for the Hotel Castro, they defy their red letters. The hotel is a pleasant surprise, a clean and friendly place in a good location and reasonably priced. The interior is a bit gloomy, and the nineteen rooms are small and boxy, but overall the place is pretty good for the price, especially if it’s hot out, as all rooms have air conditioning. If a/c is a must, this place might be your best bet in town if you’re on a budget.
