One of the best budget options in Puerto Ayora, the clean and friendly Hotel España has been recently renovated and is undergoing a major expansion. It is well located, the rooms are neat and tidy, and the mattresses have all been recently replaced. There is a new, attractive downstairs common area and even some hammocks for hanging out. The owner, Genoveva, is a friendly local lady who likes helping travelers find the right tours for them, and her daughter Esther is a SCUBA guide who can also answer any questions about the islands or what to see and do there.

The Hotel España tends to fill up, so it is advisable to make reservations or call ahead before going to Puerto Ayora. There are currently only 8 rooms, although that number will double when the renovations are finished.

It is priced comparably with the Hotel Gardner next door, with which it is not affiliated. The two hotels are probably the best value in budget lodging in town, so if one is full, your first stop should be the other.

There were problems with bathrooms in both rooms we were given, a leaking toilet in one and no water at the sink in the other. Lots of late night noise at the otherwise nice common areas in the hotel.
