Hotel

By Christopher Minster

The Flamingo seems to have undergone a superficial facelift recently. There is an attractive new sign outside, featuring a bright flamingo and a website that does not link to anything in particular, let alone the hotel. But the sign is really nice! The exterior walls have all gotten a new coat of paint, and even the trunks of the palm trees in the courtyard have been painted a bright blue and white.

Unfortunately, the Flamingo needed more than a new sign and a fresh coat of paint. The rooms are still cramped and dismal, and the whole hotel still looks as much like a converted parking lot as anything else. The surly staff could use a couple weeks at charm school, while they’re at it.

The price is $10 per person, or $15 per person if you want a room with air conditioning. I didn’t actually see any of the air conditioning units: I’d check them out before paying the higher price. All rooms have fans and private bathrooms.

If you’re trying to economize, you can do worse in Puerto Ayora than the Flamingo. The hotel is across the street from the much-nicer Hotel Gardner and Hotel España: check them all out before making up your mind.
