Few visitors to Ecuador come solely to visit the coast, understandably so really, there are much more appealing beaches elsewhere in the world. However, those who do have the time to head to the west of Ecuador will find that the coast holds a cultural richness much different than other regions of Ecuador.
The Northern Coast, which filled with lush green vegetation, is considerably closer to Quito than the cities of the Southern Coast. Also the drive to the area goes through some fascinating cities. One, Mindo, is known for its bird watching, considered by some to best in Ecuador. Also on the way is the city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados. The city itself is nothing spectacular, but nearby indigenous sites prove to be very interesting, and there is good rafting nearby.
Popular destinations on the actual coast include Atacames, which is known for its lively nightlife and Canoa, which has a chill surfer scene. The larger cities of the area, such as Esmeraldas and Manta are less popular with visitors, because of their dirty industrial feel.
