Note: a couple of guidebooks recommend Diana as a reliable budget option, unfortunately the once-hostal now only accepts patrons for extended stays of one month or more. Hotels in Esmeraldas are surprisingly clean and friendly considering the general appearance of the city itself. A good option, if you can afford to spend a few more clams, is to spend the night in Las Palmas at the beach.
