Note: a couple of guidebooks recommend Diana as a reliable budget option, unfortunately the once-hostal now only accepts patrons for extended stays of one month or more. Hotels in Esmeraldas are surprisingly clean and friendly considering the general appearance of the city itself. A good option, if you can afford to spend a few more clams, is to spend the night in Las Palmas at the beach. While not as classy as it sounds, this area offers some fairly nice to slightly more luxurious accommodation.
