A good paved road runs from Esmeraldas to Borbon and San Lorenzo to the north, continuing on to Ibarra in the northern Andes. Servicio directo (executive service) buses run to Quito and Guayaquil, and are the best option as they don’t stop to pick up passengers along the way, tend to be more comfortable, and are most definitely faster. To Quito, $6.00 regular, $7.00 directo, 5-6 hours. Trans-Esmeraldas, 10 de Agosto y Sucre, near the main park, is a good bet. Another station is Sta. Maria 870 y 9 de Octubre, Tel: 593-2-2572-996, www.transesmeraldas.com. Occidental, Aerotaxi, and Panamericana also run buses. To Guayaquil, $7.00 regular, $8.00 directo, 8 hours. To Atacames, every 15 minutes, $.60, 1 hr. Buses to Muisne leave every 30 minutes, $2, 2 hours.
