Hosteria Gabeal - Hotel Mompiche - Ecuador

Hosteria Gabeal, separated from the rest of town by a large archway, offers a variety of accommodations right on the beach. Up a sandy, palm-lined drive, you’ll find private bungalows, a building with multiple rooms and an al fresco dining area, all built in the bamboo and thatch style that’s common in Mompiche. Since it’s steps from the beach, the hostería has outdoor showers and taps where guests can wash off the salt and sand. The rooms have insect netting over the beds and clean, private bathrooms with indoor showers.

A main building doubles as a reception area, bar and kitchen (seafood is available between 1 and 4 p.m.). You can rent one of the hotel’s surfboards for $4 per hour (surf lessons are available in town) or arrange to ride a horse down the beach. During the summer months, Gabeal also offers whale-watching tours. The hotel also has a small, thatched bar with wooden saddle seats that it opened during high season.
