El Económico is a combination hotel and restaurant with rooms located up a rickety stairway over the dining areas. As the name implies, the hotel is best for travelers on a very tight budget. Rooms are dark and musty, with basic locks on the doors. The cramped, dingy bathrooms, located inside, have no doors of their own or light bulbs. To see your way to the toilet, you have to open the wooden shutter over the window. There also did not appear to be insect netting for the beds, which is almost a requirement on the mosquito-infested coast. Still, El Económico is one of the cheapest hotels you’ll find in Mompiche and, with a beach-front location, has terrific views of the ocean. In the mornings, you can also pop downstairs for a simple $2.50 breakfast or some freshly-caught seafood. If you want to pay as little as possible for your bed and don’t plan to spend much time indoors, El Económico is a good option.
