Small and unassuming from the front, Hostal Playa Paraíso is an undiscovered gem sure to reward anyone who passes through its doors. A pleasant porch area leads into a humble front room appointed with rustic furnishings and an eclectic collection of art. The reclining rocker, or pine table are perfect for sitting and collecting your thoughts, or sharing a beer with fellow travelers. Upstairs, rooms are clean and breezy, with bunks and beds featuring bright white sheets (folded down on the corners!), and fluffy pillows and mattresses meant for a good night’s sleep. Ask for the rooms towards the front for a seaside view, although most rooms offer the chance to doze off to the sound of breaking waves. Bathrooms are shared, but modern and well-maintained. And if you’re not in the mood for R&R, head to the spacious bar area out back, where you can chill out among the gardens, challenge a mate to pool, or try your luck at table tennis. There are also a few cabins out back, which are (if it’s possible) even cleaner and more modern than the front rooms, and these have private bathrooms. A family-run place, Hostal Playa Paraíso is warm and friendly, and the owner and his wife are more than happy to sit and chat—both lived in Texas for years and speak fluent English. If you’re lucky they might give you some insider advice on the area.
