Hotel

By Katie Tibbetts

A bit of love and affection, and a little artistic flair infuse an otherwise dark and drab space with life. Climb the sagging wooden stairs from the street entrance and you’ll find yourself in a spacious reception area surrounded by walls painted with creeping vines and delicate pink flowers. Clearly, the building has seen better days, but the owners have worked hard to keep it clean, and little touches—like hand-painted walls, clean swept floors, and a hammock-appointed porch area—make aging and run down feel more like old fashioned and unique. The house itself is 120 years old, and the dour faces looking back at you from the walls are members of the owner’s family. Very modest, but clean rooms come with bunk beds and either shared or private bathrooms. If you’re keen, Spanish classes are also available; ask Jacob or Jairo. The attached restaurant is open for breakfast only.
