Co-owned by three friendly Americans and a Dutchman, the restaurant offers some classics very few others have been able to successfully accomplish on this side of the equator. On a street lined with seafood restaurants facing the beach, this joint full of English-speaking staff can provide a nice break to someone looking for a bit of American fare. In addition to their thick burgers, Surf Shak also offers a delicious assortment of pizzas served hot from the kitchen. A variety of board games keep visitors entertained as they wait for food and happy hour, which lasts from 6 to 8pm every night. In the morning before the surf breaks, grab your laptop and stop by the Surf Shak to check your email, as this is one of the few spots in Canoa where wireless internet is available. Order a French press coffee and chat with the owners, who can help you plan a fun-filled day of activities. They also run the adventure tourism company Canoa Thrills, and are sponsors of Team Surf Shak, an award-winning group of young surfers who are happy to show newbies to ride the waves.
