Perhaps the greatest feature of this restaurant is its wiry, gregarious owner Arturo. The self-proclaimed prize fighter, swimmer and jack of all trades whips up some of the best ceviche in Manta, in addition to fabulous parrilladas and other traditional fare, all served with a heaping side of Arturo’s political and personal opinions—if you get him started. The restaurant is simple, open and airy, and the food is prepared from Arturo’s family recipes.
Although it doesn’t boast the same sea views as places on the Malecón, Cheers certainly has more character, and is a stellar place to sample local seafood. According to Arturo, the most popular dishes are Albacora Al Carbon (grilled tuna) and Parrillada de Mariscos, but we’ll let you decide for yourself. Note: come September 2006, Arturo may be moving his place to Santa Marieneta, further north and changing the name to Mi Vacita—but don’t tell him we told you.
