Not much distinguishes Pedernales from other coastal towns. While it features the same bamboo beachside bars as Atacames, it lacks the line of hotels and hostals that might give it more of a welcoming, resort feel. Instead, it remains more of a commercial hub and crossroads for traffic north and south than a desirable destination in itself.
That said, the town is not a bad option if you're looking to break up a trip from Esmeraldas, Canoa, Bahía or Manta. The beach, while not spectacular, is certainly picturesque enough to pencil in some time for sand and sun.
