Hotel Yam Yam

A blocky building a couple blocks off the beach, the Yam Yam doesn't have much going for it, which is why owner Yandre Arteaga has lowered the room rates and offers additional services. He is a friendly local with good knowledge of the area, and he does unofficial tours with hotel guests. He'll take you to see the nearby Isla de Cojimies or the Chindul waterfall, fishing, whatever you want to do.

The Yam Yam will appeal tho those who want to go to the beach but don't want to be out on the sand 24/7. Your best bet: call or email ahead, ask Yandre what's going on and work out a deal on the room you want.

If you’re in Pedernales and looking for a place to stay that’s conveniently close to the bus station, this is a good bet. Sitting on a main road, between the station and the beach, Hotel Yam Yam features a modern reception area and clean rooms with private baths. This isn’t mint-on-your-pillow, but its not the worst place to unpack for the night.

Traveler Reviews of Hotel Yam Yam

Stay away....

My husband and I stopped at Pedernales on our way to Canoa April 2009 and decided to stay at Hotel Yam Yam for the night because of the decent review it received from our guidebook.  When we got there, there were two women at the front desk, along with a few children.  We asked how much for one room for two people and younger of the two women said $35!  We were struck by this outrageous price as we pointed out to her that the guide book said $4-10 for a room.  She shrugged and said that that was not correct.  While we were still deciding what to do, she said that she would accept $30.  As we were talking among ourselves, the older woman asked the yonger woman "treinta dólares?" and the other nodded.   We were confused and wanted to leave, but we had just had a long day of traveling and suspected that maybe the rate has changed since the book was written in 2008.  We were shown into a room with 1 full size bed and two bunk beds.  The shower was basically a hose, which was not what we expected from paying a hefty $30.  We walked around town that afternoon and found out that the surrounding hotels only charge $8 per person per night.  When we went back to our room that evening, we discovered that there were only two small pillows for the entire room so I approached the young man who was at the front desk this particular evening and asked for some extra pillows.  He made a big deal about getting me pillows.  He said that I cannot have more pillows.  After some insistence on my part that I needed extra pillows, he reluctantly got up to get them, which located only a few steps from where he was.We checked out early that morning at 7, wanting to tell the people who ran this place that it was wrong of them to scam us like that, particularly the women.  But we found only the same young man from the previous evening.  My husband asked him how much the room generally costs.  The young man scrambled to look at the guest book.  My husband quickly covered up the page and asked again.  The young man reluctantly said "cuarenta."  So we caught Hotel Yam Yam in a lie!  The young man got really angry that he got caught lying after seeing the "real" price we paid for the room.

WE WILL NEVER RETURN TO HOTEL YAM YAM.

Great Hotel Yam Yam

It´s a nice place, near the beach in the downtown center, with very good attention to the customers.
