Ask most Ecuadorians, and they'll tell you that the food in the province of Manabi is the best in the country. Huge langostinos (giant shrimp), fresh sea bass, red snapper and swordfish, tasty lobsters in season...throw in a cold beer and what more could you want?
Pedernales hosts several good restaurants, most of them on the malecon across from the ocean. Prices are cheap: you can get a plate of fresh fish, rice and patacones (cooked green banana) for $4...and that's at one of the expensive places. If you're not afraid of street food, feel free to help yourself to a "Pincho" (a skewer of meat or sausage).
At any of the restaurants, be sure to check out the "menu," a low-cost option that usually includes soup, main course, dessert and a glass of fresh juice for as little as $2.
