Mindo to Lloa Trek - Activity Info. Mindo - Ecuador

This is a two-day trek for hikers and perhaps a four-day trek for birders and botanists. The eruptions of Guagua Pichincha between 1999 and 2002 have altered parts of this trail, and there is a risk of debris flow if Guagua becomes active; check for current conditions on the trail before hiking. The route takes you from the agricultural town of Lloa through cloud forest into western slope rainforest, skirting the southern edge of Bosque Protector Mindo-Nambillo. There has been some clearing in the river valleys for cattle, but a large amount of primary forest remains. In the late 1980s a road was planned and partially constructed for this route, but it was abandoned when it became clear that the construction maintenance costs due to unstable slopes and frequent landslides were not worth the benefits that the road would provide. Undoubtedly the area would have been deforested if the road had been constructed and, hopefully, the road will never be completed. There is plenty of water, but remember to treat it. You quickly drop to warmer elevations, so one sweater is probably sufficient, but proper raingear is essential. The trail is very muddy, so rubber boots are recommended. Check out the V!VA Ecuador: Climbing and Hiking Guide for more information on this route.
