Bellavista Cloud Forest

Bellavista Cloud Forest is one of the few lodges that has access to primary forest. The accommodations are perfect if you're most interested in escaping civilization, relaxing, hiking on beautiful trails and having access to some excellent bird watching. Activities like horseback riding are also available.

There are naturalist guides available 24-hours a day to take guests on hikes and explain the flora and fauna in the area. Bellavista is located 30 minutes off the Quito – Mindo road. The lodge has over 8 km of trails through the beautiful Tandayapa Valley, which has 330 recorded species of birds, including: hummingbirds, tanagers and toucans.

There are five different buildings that offer a range in accommodations -- from secluded honeymoon suites to rooms with a shared bath in the main, domed ‘Tarzan’s’ lodge. There are also opportunities for independent researchers and volunteers – more than half the plants remain unidentified and there is much to discover about the habits of the many species of birds.

Prices range from $10-69 per person, depending on accommodation and whether you want meals included or not. Food served is mostly vegetarian with mains of trout or chicken.

About 30 minutes off the main road from Quito - Mindo. Follow signs if you are in private transportation. The lodge is not accessible by bus but can help with private transportation from Quito.

Birds are Ok

Staff oddly patronizing and unhelpful. Guides good. Food abundant when served but staff service strangely mechanical and joyless. Birds were great. Wouldn't recommend though; 5 times higher price or more in comparison to other Ecuadorian venues. Not good value.
