Just a five-minute walk from the center of Mindo, El Rocio is a welcoming, creaky wooden hostel set among hummingbird-filled trees. The bedrooms on the first floor and the 7-bed dorm on the second floor smell musty, but they are clean, as are the shared bathrooms. However charming an all-wood house may be, the walls are very thin and it gets awfully noisy when people walk around with hiking shoes or even just talk loudly, so this hostel is a better bet on a quiet weekday than on a busy weekend. Owner Claudia speaks excellent English and can set up canopy tours, tubing and other activities for you.

I stayed at El Rocio for a long weekend in January and found that, while the people were pleasant, the overall experience fell a bit short. The rooms were musty, which I normally don't mind in a budget hostel (especially since El Rocio was clean), but the walls were also very thin, which made me occasionally feel like I was trying to sleep in a bowling alley. Since I use hostels mainly for sleeping, listening to my upstairs neighbors move furniture all night was not my favorite experience. On the upside, every morning I got to enjoy a good breakfast (a glass of yogurt with fruit, eggs and hot rolls) and then quickly head off to area attractions. Claudia and the staff were more than willing to set things up for me (as long as I reminded them about it a couple of times). Since the staff set it up for me, I didn't have to carry around a lot of cash and could pay for the attractions at the end of my stay as part of my hostel bill. One last point - if you hate the thought of a bunch of friendly dogs pushing against your legs as you eat or sit on the porch, El Rocio is not for you.
