This hotel is set in a private reserve towards the top of the access road to Mindo closer to the main highway with acres of untouched cloud forest, private paths for bird watching, a hummingbird garden, a lovely open-air café and even a jungle gym for kids.

The 22 rooms have the feel of a country home and are good for those who like more comfort than most eco-lodges of the region offer. Everything is excellent quality and naturalist guides are all bilingual.

The owners preserve the surrounding cloud forest via a non-profit organization and are involved in local conservation issues and make efforts so that the hotel ecologically friendly.

Septimo Paraiso

We thought that the website was very much the best part of this experience. The place was dark and damp, and a power cut meant that we nearly plunged to our death over various poorly lit steps. The staff refused to turn on the generator and candlelight may be romantic for awhile but not at these prices. The bilingual guide was very pleasant but her English was not great and 2-3 species of birds in an entire day was fairly unimpressive. The chef had obviously gone on holiday - the food was edible but that's about it! The staff was polite but virtually everything we saw on the website turned out to be a disappointment. Clever web design and disingenuous advertising did not leave us with a feel good factor - a huge disappointment. If this is the best that Mindo can offer - God help it! Sorry - but all true! Septimo Paraiso Cloud Forest Reserve

This was my first visit to the Septimo Paraiso Cloud Forest Reserve. The overall reserve is quite large and is home to much wildlife. I stood out in the parking rotary for an hour and saw about 8 species of birds as they cruised through. The hummingbird garden is spectacular. The hiking trails offer moderate to more adventurous hiking experiences with good views of the valley and good vantage points to observe wildlife. The accommodations were very comfortable and the food was hearty and plentiful. I will be going back for more adventures.

Great Service, great food and outstanding nature

Like the title says, the food is great, service is friendly, warm and basically great, and there are some wonderful trails that allow one of the most impressive views of the Mindo Cloud Forest we were able to see first hand during our trip.

Our week in the Cloud Forest

My wife and I visited the cloud forest resort of SeptimoParaiso for a week in July 2005. We had a wonderful time, and we are going back again for a week this summer. We first met our host, Pablo Léon, several years ago in the Amazon rainforest, where he was guiding our tour. When Pablo wasn't guiding, he was a PhD in herpetology (reptiles) studying in New Orleans. Now, he and his lovely wife Ana run their own lodge and research station. While the study of birds is "primo" down there, I understand that Pablo wants to extend the research into reptiles. During our stay there, we did see one snake, but there were lots of birds! The food was great, Pablo and Ana's two young sons were -- well -- just like two young boys should be. And Tony the dog was very friendly. We look forward to our trip back, and we will be taking a few extra days to tour Quito while we are there.

A BIRDING, WATERFALL, BUTTERFLY AND ORCHID PARADISE

Septimo Paraiso is nested in the spectacular Mindo area that is a hotspot for birds, butterflies and orchids. It has a stunning scenery and the staff could not be friendlier. I highly recomemded. Andrés

Seven Dollars for Tea!

The hostel is in a beautiful location and the people who work there are friendly and helpful. (We had some excellent Argentinian wine that you can't get many places in Ecuador and it's obvious the owners know a lot about the environment and are trying to protect their area.) However, it is WAY overpriced. The rooms are nice, but not worth $80. The dinner is fine, but not worth the minimum $13.50 you pay for it. For the amount you pay, one would think you would get a few free tea bags--they charged us $7.20 for six bags of tea!! In addition, when we checked in, they tried to sell us on a "special" which would have cost us even more. There are many more places close by that would be better. DO NOT STAY THERE--unless you have lots of money you're just dying to get rid of!
