Just one kilometer west of the entrance to the Cerro Blanco forest reserve is Puerto Hondo, a dry, weather worn town that sits on the edge of a slender saltwater estuary. Although the village itself is of little interest, the nearby mangrove swamps around the estuary are worth a visit. You can make the trip there via motorized canoes as part of a tour organized by a local guide association and the Pro Bosque Foundation.
