Menestras del Negro may seem like a strange, even offensive name (“The Black Guy's Beans” just does not translate well into English), but in Ecuador “El Negro” is often considered an endearing nickname. What the restaurant’s name tries to inspire is that they know what they are doing when it comes to making beans.
“Arroz con menestra” (Red beans or lentils and rice) is one of the most common dishes on the Ecuadorian coast. It can be eaten with just a few “patacones” (fried plantain wedges) or more frequently it is also accompanied by thin, well-cooked slices of beef, chicken, or pork. This is a fast-food restaurant, so prices are fairly low, though ordering the same thing at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant around the corner might be almost half the price.
